Getting the Most out of Small Talk in the Classroom

I don’t know about you, but students can get bored with the date and weather routine if we don’t liven it up a bit. As educators, we understand the importance of small talk in setting the tone for engaging language lessons. But why settle for mundane when we can infuse creativity and excitement into our daily chitchat? Let’s explore ways to spice up our small talk routine while honing language skills in the process.

1. Date Talk:

  • Beyond Birthdays and Events: Instead of just mentioning famous birthdays or events, challenge students to share their own memorable dates or personal milestones. This encourages them to express themselves authentically while practicing date-related vocabulary and structures.
  • National Day Extravaganza: Embrace the fun of quirky national days by incorporating themed discussions or activities. Whether it’s National Pizza Day or World Emoji Day, encourage students to share their favorite traditions or experiences related to the day’s theme.

2. Weather Banter:

  • Past, Present, and Future Weather: Expand weather discussions beyond the present moment. Encourage students to compare yesterday’s weather with today’s forecast, practicing past and present tenses seamlessly. Additionally, prompt them to predict tomorrow’s weather, enhancing future tense proficiency.
  • Extreme Weather Tales: Delve into exciting weather phenomena from around the world. From desert sandstorms to Arctic blizzards, spark curiosity by exploring diverse weather conditions and their cultural significance.

3. Well-being Check:

  • Guest Speaker Insights: Introduce a “guest speaker” via video who shares how they feel today.  This could be another teacher, principal, or even a community member. Hearing diverse perspectives enriches discussions and promotes empathy.  I usually find a teacher who is willing to participate.  This isn’t something I do daily, but I do use it frequently.
  • Emotional Expressions through Art: Incorporate visual cues to deepen emotional expression. Instead of relying solely on emoji faces, encourage students to create their own artistic representations of emotions, fostering creativity and self-expression.

4. Cultural Curiosities:

  • Festive Traditions: Explore cultural celebrations and traditions from around the world. From Chinese New Year to Diwali, encourage students to share their own cultural practices or learn about those of their classmates, fostering cross-cultural understanding.
  • Language Idioms and Proverbs: Introduce language-specific idioms or proverbs related to well-being. From Spanish “¡Que te mejores pronto!” (Get well soon!) to French “Rire c’est la meilleure médecine” (Laughter is the best medicine), delve into linguistic nuances while discussing well-being.

By infusing small talk with these dynamic elements, we transform routine conversations into vibrant language experiences. Embrace the richness of cultural exploration, weather whimsies, and emotional expressions, creating an immersive environment where language learning transcends the ordinary. Let’s spice up our small talk and embark on a journey of linguistic discovery together!
